The good, the bad, and the ugly

The Good

We’re coming up to four weeks since we moved to Toronto, and things haven’t been too bad so far. True, we thought it would be super easy to find jobs and a place to live, but we’ve been enjoying spending some time together after a busy few months at home, and Cassie has loved having us around all the time for long walks and squirrel chasing fun.

But, it needed to come to an end soon, before one of us killed the other. Personally, I would put bets on me bumping Geth off first, he be drivin’ me crazy sometimes.

All is well though, he officially started his job last week, and I start with Aveda tomorrow. I’ll be sad to see my 6 week term of unemployment come to an end, but really looking forward to getting stuck in and having a bit more structure back in my life, and wearing something that doesn’t have an elasticated waistband.

Goodbye to you too, Netflix my dear friend, I’ll miss you *sob*.

Having jobs also means we’ve been able to apply for some apartments, we hope to hear back from one tomorrow, so keep your fingers crossed for us.

So that’s the good, yey to employment!

The Bad

The bad, you ask?

Well, if you ever thought moving was a faff, I challenge you to move five bags, a dog and her massive crate across Toronto without a car. ‘Cause that’s what we did.

Yes that’s right, even though we only had four bags coming here, and haven’t bought anything new apart from wellies, there wasn’t room for everything when I re-packed. How does that happen!? Seriously, every time I go anywhere. But that’s another rant entirely.

We had initially booked Airbnb up to April 28th, thinking it would be a breeze finding more permanent accommodation. Little did we know eh?!

So we had to move from our lovely one bed apartment, in a lovely quiet neighbourhood, next to a lovely park, located near a lovely amount of easily accessible public transport.

Off we went on Cassie’s first TTC adventure across town. She was brill and people loved her, which is more than can be said for her stressed and anxious parents.

You will now find me blogging from a not so lovely, tiny studio, in a not so lovely neighbourhood, with no lovely park, and limited access to not so lovely buses.

The Ugly

Gethin Williams, you’ve been let off, you don’t have to be ‘The Ugly’. This time

This more recent Airbnb definitely takes that award away from you. I’ve listed its attributes for ease:

  • It’s just two rooms, a bedroom/kitchen and a bathroom
  • The door from the bedroom/kitchen, aka the only door, leads right onto a busy main road
  • The noise from said main road makes it really difficult to get any sleep
  • We couldn’t find the cutlery, eventually realised it was all in a bag in the drawer. Unwashed.
  • Had to buy towels because the ones provided were so mingin
  • The bathroom door doesn’t shut
  • There’s no light in the bathroom
  • There’s a door behind some shelves, which leads into the unit next door . We had to buy masking tape to tape round the door to stop the fag smoke from coming in. So far ineffective
  • The main door doesn’t lock from the inside which resulted in us being woken at 4:30am today by a random guy coming in, apologising, and shutting the door again*

We’re here now until the 15th at least, so hopefully something will come up in the meantime, because I don’t think I can face anymore Airbnb for a little while.

So on we go into a new month as newly employed Canadian residents. Hurrah!

May also means we are heading into my birthday month, which can only ever mean good things.

Like cake.

I like cake.

*Luckily we have a big German Shepherd to protect us – NOT!! Cassie stirred a little, kind of barked but not really, and went back to sleep. Cheers beaut
